MINN KOTA Pro’s Pointers by Mark Kulik

  1. |When fishing a lily pad field or patch for bass, start by making pitches to the edges and work your way in. Casting farther in first and pulling a struggling fish over a distance will spook other fish in the area.

  2. In tournaments, fishing behind other anglers is a way of life, catching bass behind another team is not always easy but it can be done. For example, if the other anglers are using flipping jigs, try a different approach like a tube with an internal weight or a Senko type bait. This gives non- aggressive bass a different look and often results in a reflex strike from less active fish.

  3. | After a cold front, bass will usually hold tighter to cover and will not be feeding as actively. When fishing a likely area be thorough and persistent! Getting these negative fish to bite often requires downsizing your bait selection. Often a non-feeding fish will strike out at an object that intrudes into its territory, “a response bite”. It’s is not uncommon for these fish to become less lethargic as the water warms up, even a degree or two can make a huge difference. Therefore don’t be afraid to return to areas that didn’t produce earlier in the day, you might be pleasantly surprised!

  4. Have you ever been fishing a dock and your lure gets picked up by a bass and it starts speeding away from the dock? Well, chances are there are more fish underneath that cover. Bass are very competitive when it comes to food so when there are more than one fish present, the first fish that hits will often motor out quickly so as to not have his meal stolen.

Mark Kulik is an accomplished tournament angler from Innisfil. Married to wife, Jenny and with two fast growing young ones, Bradley and Trevor, Mark values only his family above his love of fishing.
