Putting the Odds in Your Favour!
|You can increase your chances in any tournament or on any fishing trip by controlling as many variables as possible. One of the great attractions and challenge of the tournament fishing is the number of variables that can come into play on any given day. Some of them we have no control over but if we play attention to the ones that we can control, look out! There is a certain amount of luck involved in any kind of fishing, but in competitive tournament events the top guns make their own luck.

Controllable Factors

  1. | Take proper care of your equipment! That means oiling & lubing your reels, checking the guides on your rods, sharpening hooks, breaking in your motor properly, maintaining your batteries, etc. I could go on & on, but they’re all important!
  2. Buy the best equipment that you can afford! When you’re paying hard-earned money for entry fees don’t scrimp and buy no-name brand line for an example.
  3. Study your maps & put in as much pre-fish time as possible. As far as I’m concerned decision-making is the most critical aspect of tournament fishing and decisions are a lot easier to make when you have the right information to deal with.
  4. Drink plenty of fluids and maintain your energy level with snack bars! Concentration is another key factor in being competitive and you can’t concentrate properly if you’re are tired, hungry or dehydrated.
  5. Plan your trip with plenty of allowance for unforeseen problems. Get to the launch in lots of time to get checked in, etc. Haste does make waste!
  6. Know the tournament rules, blast-off & check-in times. No excuse for not knowing what the minimum size is or how many fish that you are allowed.

I hope that these few tips & suggestions are helpful, we’ll see you on the water soon.
